RugbyTown Showdown at Infinity Park

GLENDALE – A full slate of local rugby will be on showcase when Infinity Park hosts the RugbyTown Showdown on Saturday, May 7.

The action kicks off at 1 p.m. with a matchup of the Denver area’s premier women’s rugby clubs. This game will pit the Glendale Raptors, recent champions of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) against Black Ice, the longest standing women’s rugby club in the State of Colorado (founded in 1991).

“Black Ice will bring a great level of physicality and will be completely relentless,” Glendale Raptors women’s head coach Kittery Wagner Ruiz said. “Fans can expect a great match. They should look forward to big hits and good rugby all around.”

As a display of the best that women’s rugby in Colorado has to offer, the game will highlight both competition and camaraderie.

“Over the years there has been a rivalry between our two teams, but the last few years that’s changed to a mutually beneficially relationship,” said Black Ice captain Alice Plant, prior to the teams’ previous meeting, a 53-10 victory by Glendale back in March. “We always open our season against them and give each other competitive matches. We have different cultures but the more high-level rugby in Denver, the better for everyone.”

Following the women’s game, the day’s events conclude with a Pacific Rugby Premiership (PRP) matchup between the Glendale Raptors (9-1) and Denver Barbarians (2-8-1) men’s teams at 3 p.m.

“The cross-town rivalry between Glendale and the Barbarians has always been great. A lot of people come out and support this game because it’s about bragging rights,” said Andre Snyman, head coach of the Glendale Raptors men’s team. “There’s always a lot of energy and motivation involved. There are players that have played for both teams, so it’s always a good game and I’m looking forward to it.”

The Glendale men currently sit atop the PRP standings with 45 points in the table and are looking to clinch the team’s third-straight trip to the PRP Final in pursuit of back-to-back league titles.

Tickets to the RugbyTown Showdown are $6 (free admission to kids 12 and under) and can be purchased at the gate or online.
